Collins, an outfielder with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms (today's Los
Angeles Dodgers) dies of typhoid fever at the age of 28. Seven days
earlier, he had left a game in the ninth inning against the
Beaneaters in Boston because of a “cold.” Collins declined
rapidly, and his wife was called from Louisville to his bedside. But
he passed away by the time she arrived. On May 29, the Bridegrooms
will hold a benefit game for Collins' widow. A crowd of 7,126

BROOKVILLE
– South Dearborn's Makenzie Wheat and Ariel Biggs broke records to
highlight Tuesday night's IHSAA girls track and field sectional at
Franklin County.
Wheat,
who's been good for at least one new record per week of late,
surpassed the 1994 sectional standard of 41'2” by Lawrenceburg's
Tonya Roach with her winning effort of 42 feet even.
The
Bowling Green University-bound SD senior also won discus (177'7”)
in the first real good-weather meet of the late-arriving spring,
staged under sunny 83-degree conditions.
