Indiana State Police investigators arrested Brian Woeste, 26, of Ohio County, Thursday, July 5, in connection with the death of 1-year-old Nolan Helfrich.

The investigation began Wednesday, Jan. 18, when state police detectives were called to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in reference to a seriously injured child who had apparently suffered his injuries at a residence in Rising Sun. Nolan Helfrich died at Children’s Hospital Friday, Jan. 20. An autopsy was conducted and the final results of the autopsy revealed Nolan Helfrich died of blunt force trauma to the head, neck, and torso.

The investigation revealed Brian Woeste was the live-in boyfriend of Michelle Helfrich, Nolan’s mother. On the afternoon of Jan. 18, while Michelle was attending class at Ivy Tech in Lawrenceburg, Woeste was babysitting Nolan when the injuries occurred. The autopsy revealed the injuries Nolan suffered were “non-accidental” injuries and the manner of death was ruled as homicide.

Woeste was arrested by state police detectives Thursday without incident at his father’s residence in Switzerland County. He is currently being held in the Switzerland County Jail on charges of Murder, Battery Resulting in Death of a Person Less than Fourteen Years of Age, a class A felony; and two counts of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, also class A felonies.
