Final week scramble ST. LEON - It’s a scramble for the finish line in girls high school basketball this week, with IHSAA sectionals set to tip off Tuesday for area teams.

South Dearborn’s Lady Knights (8-11, 2-7 EIAC), after struggling most of the season, proved again what a late-season surge of adrenaline can do Tuesday - pulling off a 49-42 league road upset of an East Central crew that had thumped them soundly (51-38) back on Dec. 17.
“I don’t know where that came from, but it was a nice one to get,” said SD coach Bob Bressert, a bit perplexed, afterward.

Local missionaries OK; help needed for refugees, orphans On Tuesday, Jan. 12 shortly before 5 p.m. an earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude struck the island country of Haiti. An earthquake? Yes. Not a hurricane. They had four of those last year, killing over 20,000.
The death total this time estimated at more than 200,000.
The news came two months before a scheduled trip my myself and others to the poorest country in the western hemisphere. That has been cancelled for now.

Jaqueline Bennington Jacqueline A. "Jackie" (Cole) Bennington. 68, Treasure Island, Fla., died suddenly Jan. 21, 2010, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital. Born in Lawrenceburg, Ind., she moved to Florida in 1993, from Harrison, Ohio. She was a retired medical records manager and enjoyed swimming, traveling and caring for people. She was a very loving and devoted wife. Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Bill; sister, Kay Schwemberger; sister-in-law Ceciliea Ritter and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial Park Funeral Home, St. Petersburg, Fla., was in charge of arrangements. Read more...
